Day 1 CPT Policy at UC

Graduate CPT Guidelines:
  • From their initial semester, graduate students can apply for CPT, which is a fundamental component of their advanced studies.
  • Students can engage in part-time CPT without any monthly restrictions.
  • Should a student engage in full-time CPT for 12 months or more, they become ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT). It's imperative for students to monitor their CPT duration.
  • An application must be accompanied by a written job or internship offer, which should:
    • Be on the company's official letterhead.
    • Feature an authentic signature from a company-authorized person.
    • Be dated within the last six months.
Steps for CPT Authorization:
  1. Secure a job or internship aligned with the student's study domain (A formal Offer Letter is mandatory).
  2. Fill out a CPT application or its renewal form.
  3. Submit the CPT application materials, including the signed Offer Letter (dated within six months), job specifics, Employer CPT Authorization Form, and the endorsed CPT partnership agreement to the school's DSO.
  4. Upon CPT approval, students are issued a new I20 and can commence work as per the CPT's start date on the I20.

Day 1 CPT Course Structure

Executive Programs span three 15-week semesters annually, typically culminating in 5-6 semesters. Each semester comprises three courses. A mandatory three-day in-person class is held each semester, typically from Friday to Sunday. Non-attendance can jeopardize a student's F1 status.

The University doesn't mandate an on-campus workplace, allowing students to pursue CPT anywhere. Many opt to travel for their classes.

CPT FAQs
  1. Is attendance compulsory for the three-day in-person courses?
Yes. Full attendance is mandatory, with no concessions for late arrivals or early departures. Non-compliance is deemed as complete absence for that semester.

  2. Consequences of missing an Onsite course?
Every in-person session is mandatory. A single session can be compensated for during the program. Missing a second session can lead to expulsion. Absentees are liable for a $300 fee for make-up classes and might need to furnish a valid reason for their absence. Make-up sessions should be concluded by semester-end, or it can lead to expulsion.

  3. Procedure for compensating missed classes?
The academic team will notify students about the make-up class details. Only one make-up session is permissible each semester. Non-attendance in a three-day compensatory session can lead to program expulsion and potential SEVIS termination.

Day 1 CPT Programs at UC

Students in the UC Executive Program are required to take three courses per semester. Each academic year consists of three (3) semesters: fall, spring, and summer. Two courses each semester focus on specific course content, and the third class includes an applied learning practicum (CPT course) in which students apply what they have learned in the other two courses to real-world situations through work or internship experience.

CPT is an integral part of the program curriculum.
