Your Guide to Westcliff University: Coursework, CPT Policies, and More

Overview

Westcliff University stands out as one of the most popular choices among schools offering Curricular Practical Training (CPT) programs. Its strong reputation is backed by credible accreditations and a long history of quality education. Additionally, the requirement of attending onsite classes once a semester is manageable. A reliable institution is crucial for those working on CPT, especially when it comes to getting H1b visas or handling Requests for Evidence (RFEs). However, Westcliff does have its drawbacks, such as high tuition fees and a somewhat heavy academic workload.

Advisors and Support System

In my experience, the efficiency with which advisors respond to student issues varies and largely depends on the advisor you are assigned. A good advisor can resolve issues within 1-3 business days via email, making the process considerably easier. In contrast, an unresponsive advisor means you'll have to be more proactive in seeking solutions.

At Westcliff, students get three different advisors at various stages:

  1. Admission Advisor: Responsible for the application process up to the orientation period.

  2. Academic Advisor: Handles matters related to coursework, tuition, and other academic concerns post-enrollment.

  3. International Advisor: Specialized in CPT and visa-related concerns, likely the most frequently contacted advisor for international students.

For general issues like course changes, grade modifications, or annual vacation applications, contacting the relevant advisor and filling out a specific Google Form usually does the trick.

Coursework and Onsite Experience

Westcliff University leans toward the heavier side when it comes to academic workload. Students generally enroll in two courses per semester: one core and one CPT-related course. Assignments are usually due on Thursdays and Sundays.

Starting from Fall 2023, weekday classes now last three hours. For those who opt for weekend classes, the timings are from 9 AM to 3 PM on Saturdays. Classes often require active camera participation and may include classroom discussions or quizzes.

The academic load and the overall experience can vary greatly depending on the instructor. Students can check instructor ratings on platforms to make an informed choice. If you end up with an unsatisfactory or overly demanding instructor, you can apply for a course change within the first two weeks.

Homework typically consists of weekly discussion posts and longer papers every one or two weeks. Onsite classes, required once per semester, are conveniently located near the Irvine Santa Ana Airport, with affordable hotel options and a plethora of dining choices nearby.

CPT Policies

For CPT applications, an offer letter and a CPT agreement (or employment verification letter) are required. These documents must be renewed every semester. If there's a delay in receiving the updated I-20, it's advisable to contact the international advisor and student account office as soon as possible. Phone calls to the international office are generally more effective for urgent matters.

Time Commitment and Academic Breaks

On average, you can expect to dedicate around 5-9 hours per week for CPT classes and assignments. After completing three semesters, you can apply for an academic break, known as 'annual vacation,' during which you can continue working on CPT. Applications should be submitted a month before the new semester begins, using a Google Form to provide basic information and reasons for the break.

Overall, Westcliff University provides a robust structure for those looking to combine academic experience with practical training, although it comes with its own set of challenges and demands.
