Day 1 CPT Policy at Trine University
Curricular Practical Training or CPT is a training program, integral to the program completion of most degree programs. It is available for all students and is mentioned in the course catalog of that major. The student receives academic course credit (0.5 credit per semester) for this training and these credits count toward the course completion. On seeking their advice, academic advisors will guide you through this. Once authorized, a student can work part-time or full-time, while maintaining a full-time student status.
International graduate students admitted into an experiential track, in which an internship experience is an integral part of the program of study, are required to enroll in an internship course for credit and be engaged in an active internship experience, whether full or part-time. F-1 students admitted into the non-experiential track must be enrolled for a complete academic year in order to be approved for CPT.
Important facts:
Students are advised to keep the following factors in mind:
- To be able to work in the United States, one must be approved and authorized. Any form of employment without authorization is considered illegal.
- Final approval of credit-granting internships or co-ops is with your respective academic department.
- Approval of CPT is printed on your I-20 along with the name of your employer, and dates of your employment.
- CPT is approved one year at a time.
- Students authorized for full-time CPT of one year or more lose their eligibility for Optional Practical Training (OPT). To be eligible for OPT, one must work for less than 52 weeks or 2,080 hours.
- It is the student’s responsibility to keep track of the number of hours they work.
